Babylon is Fallen (Revelation 18)



Revelation 18

Title: “Babylon is fallen, is fallen” (Isaiah 21:9; Jeremiah 51:8; Revelation 14:8) 
Theme: The Judgment of the Great Whore 
Text: “And after these things… (Revelation 18:1)

I. John Saw and Heard a Mighty Angel (v.1-3)
A.     He came down from heaven
B.     Having great power [authority]
C.     The earth was lightened [illuminated] with his glory
D.     He cried mightily with a strong voice
1.      Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen
2.      And is become the habitation of devils
3.      And the hold of every foul spirit
4.      And a cage of every unclean and hateful bird
E.      For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication
F.      And the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her
G.     And the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies
II. John Heard Another Voice from Heaven (v.4-20)
A.     Come out of her My people [saints]
B.     Reward her even as she has rewarded you, and double unto her double according to her works…
C.     How much she has glorified herself and lived deliciously…
D.     So much torment and sorrow give her
E.      For she says in her heart
1.      I sit a queen
2.      I am no widow
3.      I shall see no sorrow
F.      Therefore, shall her plagues come in one day
1.      Death, mourning and famine
2.      She shall utterly be burned with fire
3.      For strong is the Lord God who judges her
III. The Kings of the Earth bewail Her (v.9, 10)
A.     Alas, alas that great city Babylon, that mighty city
B.     For in one hour is thy judgment come
IV. The Merchants of the Earth shall weep and mourn over Her (v.11-17a)
A.     For no man buys their merchandise any more
B.     And the fruits that thy soul lusted after are departed
C.     They shall stand afar off for the fear of her torment, weeping and wailing
D.     Saying, Alas, alas that great city, that was clothed in purple…
E.      For in one hour so great riches is come to nothing
V. The Shipmasters/Merchants of the Sea stood afar off and cried for Her (v.17b-19)
A.     What city is like unto this great city
B.     They cast dust on their heads and cried
C.     Saying, Alas, alas that great city, wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea…
D.     For in one hour she is made desolate
VI. Rejoice over Her (v.20)
A.     Thou Heaven
B.     Ye Holy Apostles and Prophets
C.     For God has avenged you on Her
VII. A Mighty Angel took up a Stone like a Great Millstone and cast it into the Sea (v.21-24)
   A   Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all
C.     No Music, Craft, Millstone, Light of a Candle, Bride or Bridegroom shall be heard of seen in Babylon
D.     For they Merchants were the great men of the earth, for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived
E.       And in her was found the blood of prophets, and of saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth.
